The Arizona Game and Fish Department (Information Education Division – Information Branch) at its Phoenix location is seeking a Public Information Officer II. The Department’s mission is to conserve Arizona’s diverse wildlife resources and manage for safe, compatible outdoor recreation opportunities for current and future generations.
Description of Duties: This position is responsible for providing public information/public affairs work on the Department’s activities and issues, including, but not limited to, wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation such as wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing, shooting sports, boating and off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation. The position writes and produces printed and electronic communications products for the public; engages in the Department’s social media efforts (e.g., creates and posts content, tracks analytics, monitors and responds to comments/questions, helps plan strategy); writes and distributes news releases and media advisories; handles various aspects of media relations; engages in advertising and marketing activities; assesses communications needs and develops and implements communications plans; participates and staffs booths/exhibits at public outreach events such as outdoor expos; provides in-the-field media relations assistance to biologists and other Department personnel; answers questions and communicates information through direct customer contact; and handles storage, distribution and inventory control of brochures and other printed communications.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: The candidate must have knowledge and understanding of the principles of writing, mass communications, journalism, social media and marketing. Professional social media experience (developing channels, creating and posting content, measuring analytics, and helping guide social media strategy) would be a big plus. The candidate must be skilled and able to write/create and distribute a variety of written communications products. Must be able to develop and implement communications plans and/or marketing plans where necessary and effectively interact with news media and coordinate media interactions during critical incidents. The candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, good interpersonal skills, and must be a self-starter.
The preferred candidate will have a minimum of two years’ experience in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or social media in the public or private sector OR a minimum of two years’ experience in outreach and education for an organization involved with wildlife conservation or outdoor recreation. Some knowledge of, and participation in, outdoor recreation activities such as off-highway vehicle recreation, boating, wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing or shooting sports would be a plus, as would the ability to shoot and edit photos and video, and the ability (or willingness to learn) to pull a trailer and operate an off-highway vehicle or boat.
The position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training in accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.
