How long have you been a member of IABC?
I have been an active member of IABC since July 2008. I began attending the luncheons periodically as a non-member when I relocated to Phoenix from Seattle in August 2005. I am currently a candidate for the ABC certification with the final test scheduled for September.
What is your current position/company?
I am the Information Specialist with the City of Chandler Community Services Department and Recreation Division. I oversee the marketing, advertising and public relations.
What is your favorite aspect of your job?
I enjoy managing a variety of marketing and public relations programs, and every day presents new projects to pursue. I am fortunate to have the opportunities to interact with many stakeholders in the community, ranging from sponsors to businesses to non-profit organizations.
What do you hope to gain from your membership/involvement with IABC?
I value working with the board on different activities and always look forward to networking with members and non-members at IABC functions.
What words of advice do you have for young professionals?
Be thorough, humble and persistent. Have a flexible, laidback mentality when it comes to new tasks, teams and environments. Don’t ever stop learning; pursue as many continuing education opportunities in other disciplines as you can accomodate.
Who was/were your biggest professional influence(s)?
Dave Wohlhueter, the Sports Information Director at Cornell University. He was a humble, thorough, respected long-time PR director for all of Cornell’s Athletics. Also, Tim Hallam, the long-time PR Director of the Chicago Bulls. He endured through a lot of drama with the team, media spotlight and maintained a steady, stoic demeanor of cool professionalism.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy going mountain bike riding, hiking, tennis, basketball, travel, writing, watching movies and trying attend as many professional development events and conferences that I can fit into my schedule.
What destination do you want to travel to the most?
Iceland, Australia, Banff and Lake Louise in Canada.
