2007 Copper Quill Award

In 1946, Woody and Victoria Johnson opened Woody's El Nido in Phoenix, Ariz. Serving authentic Mexican dishes in a warm and inviting atmosphere, the restaurant was a hit with locals. That small restaurant led to the opening of the first Macayo's Mexican Kitchen nearby. Since then, Macayo's has grown to 17 locations throughout Arizona and Las Vegas. 2006 marked the 60th anniversary of Macayo's Mexican Kitchen. Now run by Woody and Victoria's children, Stephen, Sharisse and Garry, Macayo's 60th anniversary presented the opportunity to reinvigorate the restaurants in the market, educate the public about Macayo's long-standing tradition as a family-owned and-operated Arizona business and to thank local customers for their years of patronage. To mark the occasion and reinvigorate local interest in the eatery, Macayo's embarked on a year-long celebration. The owners intended to use the 60th anniversary to showcase the history of the restaurant and its place in Phoenix culture, as well as thank its local customers for their years of patronage. As Macayo's agency of record, Martz was charged with creating a marketing communications plan that integrated advertising, promotion and public relations efforts throughout 2006 to consistently reinforce the 60th anniversary messages.
