2007 Copper Quill Award

For this SmartHealth illustration, art director Lisa Hewitt collaborated with illustrator Jennifer Kalis to come up with art that would visually integrate the concepts of a mammogram and annual visits. The challenge was conveying the idea of “once a year” and making it stick in the readers' minds, while tying it to the story subject of breast cancer screening positively. This was accomplished by placing pink ribbons—widely known for their association with breast cancer support and the quest for a cancer cure—on a tree, which goes through annual cycles of losing and renewing its leaves. The woman in the illustration takes active responsibility for her health by picking one of the ribbons.
