Although the 172-year-old Phelps Dodge has been mining copper in the southwestern U.S. for 125 years, most of the recent arrivals to the rapidly growing region were unfamiliar with the company and the economic and social benefits it creates in the communities in which it does business. The company's 125th year in copper mining provided a perfect opportunity to educate and inform residents about the company, remind state and local officials of Phelps Dodge's contributions to the state, teach schoolchildren about the company and build goodwill among employees. They used focus groups, newspaper inserts, op-ed pieces, employee events, government relations and a grade-school essay contest to shape and deliver their messages.
